Phosphor night vision goggles are changing the way we see the world at night and Precision Electronic Glass custom manufactures critical glass components to make these changes possible.
Special Glass Components are Making Lives Safer
PEG is the custom manufacturer of components that help us see better at night. For decades, night vision goggles were made with green phosphor to create the familiar green illumination that makes it possible to see in the dark. The technology makes use of any existing light which is amplified to display the surroundings.
However, night vision today is vastly improved with a view made possible with white phosphor creating a black-and-white visual. Similarly, this enhanced, more natural view provides improved definition and clarity for the wearer.
Plus, white phosphor technology improves distance and peripheral distance for the wearer. It also helps the wearer distinguish between objects. In addition, it is much easier on the eyes. Traditional green phosphorus produces eye strain in the wearer after four hours of use. White phosphor provides extended comfort for 10 hours without eye strain.
This technology improves security and safety for the military, Coast Guard, police, search and rescue, oil industry, shipping, security, and all industries that operate outdoors at night such as refineries.
How Phosphor Night Vision Goggles Work
Phosphor night vision goggles boost a dim, dark scene in a series of simple steps:
- Dim light from a night scene enters the lens at the front. As a result, the light comprises photons (particles of light) of all colors.
- As the photons enter the goggles, they strike a light-sensitive surface called a photocathode. Therefore, it’s a bit like a very precise solar panel. Certainly, its quite a job is to convert photons into electrons (the tiny, subatomic particles that carry electricity round a circuit).
- The electrons are amplified by a photomultiplier. To clarify, this is a kind of photoelectric cell. Consequently, each electron entering the photomultiplier results in many more electrons leaving it.
- The electrons leaving the photomultiplier hit a phosphor screen, similar to the screen in an old-fashioned television. Then, as the electrons hit the phosphor, they create tiny flashes of light.
- Since there are many more photons than originally entered the goggles, the screen makes a much brighter version of the original scene.

About PEG
PEG’s mission is to provide customized glass and quartz products and related services to OEMs and distributors. We work globally in all countries where our customers operate. Our objective is to fabricate the finest precision glass and quartz components and assemblies to customers’ specifications. Working together with customers, PEG manufactures prototypes; handles small to large production runs; performs value-added assembly, and provides cleanroom processing when specifications dictate the need for it.
Utilizing standard or computer-controlled glass lathe fabrication; glass-to-glass and glass-to-metal graded seals; cutting and end finishing; and precision grinding/polishing. PEG produces components and value-added assemblies, including medical, dental, or industrial glass X-ray tubes, CO2 or HeNe lasers. We produce all glass and quartz fabrications in facilities certified to ISO 9001:2015 standards of quality. Our commitment to quality and integrity in everything we do is reflected in our mission statement, corporate values, and quality policy.
