Summary/ Objective
The Machinist/ Grinding Operator/ Programmer performs grinding duties as assigned while interpreting and following specifications for each product per the related job package, drawing and/or prints, PEG’s QCIP’s, and/or the customer’s criteria. The Machinist/ Grinding Operator/ Programmer programs, sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of manual and automated machine equipment and tools to produce precision components.
This position reports directly to the Grinding Department Unit Leader and indirectly to the Production Manager.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform grinding duties as assigned which may include cut, trim, and beveling, material prep, sand blasting, belt grinding, straightening, and concentric grind operations
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures required to complete the job
- Employ all gauging equipment throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the accuracy of parts per print
- Program machines using HMI and G-Code
- Identify visual defects per PEG’s QCIP’s based upon CTQ (Critical to Quality) criteria
- Read, interpret, and employ part drawings and/or prints
- Fill out work related travelers, charts, and identification cards
- Accurately scan in and out of jobs utilizing the job package and Visual Manufacturing
- Input accurate production data in Visual Manufacturing
- Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and follows prescribed safety procedures
- Other duties as assigned to ensure quality of parts and workflow
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English to perform the duties of the job
- Ability to read, interpret, and employ prints
- Ability to read and understand all measuring devices related to the operation (micrometers, calipers, tape measure, ruler, dial indicator, etc.….)
- Ability to use technology, instruments, tools and information systems effectively
- Possesses the ability to program machines using HMI and G-Code
- Possesses computer skills necessary to program a variety of grinding machines
- Possesses excellent mathematical skills
- Possesses excellent analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, critical thinking, decision making abilities, time management, and communication skills
- Ability to keep close attention to detail and multi-task
- Ability to follow instructions and to collaborate with others to achieve group results
- Ability to train other members of the grinding team on newly programmed jobs
Experience Requirements
- Experience in a manufacturing environment helpful
- Experience with HMI inputs and G code required
- 3 Years of related machine programming and operating experience or ability to show skill
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee will experience prolonged periods of standing and walking in a non-climate-controlled environment. The employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and hear. The employee is frequently required to bend, squat, sit, stand, walk, push/ pull, handle objects (manual dexterity), and reach above shoulder level. The employee must carry/ lift loads up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to excessive noise, moving machinery, marked changes in temperature and humidity, dust, fumes, gases, radiation, motorized equipment, and works in confined quarters.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flex scheduling is available upon request.
