Lathe Operator

As a Lathe Operator at PEG, you’ll work hands-on with precision glass and quartz components, forming and shaping parts to meet exact customer specifications. This position requires excellent attention to detail, a strong commitment to quality, and steady focus in a production environment. You’ll be responsible for setting up and operating lathe equipment, reading job packets and blueprints, inspecting parts using precision measuring tools, and maintaining accurate production records. Your craftsmanship and accuracy will help uphold PEG’s reputation for producing reliable, custom glass and quartz components for industries worldwide.

Summary/ Objective

Lathe Operator performs lathe duties as assigned while interpreting and following specifications for each product per the related job package, drawing and/or prints, PEG’s QCIP’s, and/or the customer’s criteria.

This position reports directly to the lathe department unit leader and indirectly to the hot end supervisor.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Perform lathe duties as assigned which may include hot cutting, fire polishing, hot pinning, forming and shaping, glass-to-glass seals, glass-to-metal seals
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures required to complete the job
  • Employ all gauging equipment throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the accuracy of parts per print
  • Identify visual defects per PEG’s QCIP’s based upon CTQ (Critical to Quality) criteria
  • Read, interpret, and employ part drawings and/or prints
  • Fill out work related travelers, charts, and identification cards
  • Accurately scan in and out of jobs utilizing the job package and Visual Manufacturing
  • Input accurate production data in Visual Manufacturing
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and follows prescribed safety procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure quality of parts and workflow
  • Familiar with company policies

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to perform the duties of the job
  • Ability to read, interpret, and employ work order travelers and prints
  • Ability to read, interpret, and employ all measuring devices related to the operation (micrometers, calipers, tape measure, ruler, dial indicator, etc.….)
  • Ability to identify a defect and troubleshoot basic issues
  • Possesses computer skills necessary to operate manufacturing software
  • Possesses mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Possesses problem-solving ability, active listening, critical thinking and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to interpret and follow specifications for each product being made in accordance with the appropriate job package
  • Ability to keep close attention to detail

Experience Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience as a lathe operator at a facility that fabricates precision glass components or ability to show skill

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee will likely be standing for extended periods of time and is regularly required to talk, listen, and hear. The employee is frequently required to bend, squat, sit, stand, walk, push/ pull, handle objects (manual dexterity), and reach above shoulder level. The employee must carry/ lift loads up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to excessive noise, moving machinery, marked changes in temperature and humidity, dust, fumes, gases, and open flames

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flex scheduling is available upon request but must fit the needs of the company. 

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

 

What to Expect During Your Interview with PEG

Phone Interview

  • During the phone interview you will be given a quick overview of PEG and we will discuss the position available as well as your work history.

In-Person Interview

  • You’ll first be introduced to the position and given the chance to process some parts. After that, there will be a short aptitude test covering: Reading comprehension Basic math (addition and subtraction) Print reading Measuring with calipers Please don’t worry if you don’t have experience with print reading or measurement tools — this will not disqualify you from employment. We are happy to provide training.

Post-Offer Requirements

  • If you are offered a position, the offer will be contingent on: Completing a physical and drug test within 72 hours of the offer
  • Verifying your eligibility to work in the U.S. through E-Verify
